George Ohr, who called himself the "Mad Potter of Biloxi," was an eccentric ceramic artist in the late 19th century who gained acclaim only posthumously. Born in 1857, Ohr revolutionized pottery with his avant-garde creations that were characterized by unique forms and bright glazes. Due to the high prices he set for his work and tragedies such as a devastating 1894 studio fire and the theft of 600 pieces he exhibited at the 1885 World’s Fair in New Orleans, Ohr struggled for recognition during his life.  However, as he predicted, his legacy endures. There is no doubt of his influence on modern ceramics and his status as an unconventional genius ahead of his time.
